Gas-Powered Airsoft Guns

Gas-powered airsoft guns are designed in a variety of styles. The ability to use gas to propel the pellets down the barrel is a favorite among serious marksmen, as it allows the user to adjust the velocity or to use a blowback feature. Airsoft pistols tend to use gas power as well, since the small size of the weapon makes using an electric-powered mechanism virtually impossible, not to mention remarkably impractical.

The blowback feature in gas powered airsoft guns is a mechanism by which a gun can simulate the operation of a real firearm through slide or bolt cycles. Since the mechanical complexities, regulation processes of the gas, and distribution difficulties, the airsoft sportsmen have largely chosen electric guns instead, primarily due to the advanced, specialized applications. Gas guns are still desired among some airsoft gun owners and users, however, for reasons which can range from personal preference, tradition, or any host of reasons.

Gas-powered airsoft guns are not limited to pistols alone. In fact, sniper rifle and submachine gun replicas tend to use gas mechanisms. The submachine guns often feature blowback mechanisms, similar to airsoft pistol replicas. Sniper rifles, on the other hand, tend to leave out the blowback mechanism, and instead use an increased muzzle velocity and a reduced recoil. Gas-powered guns are favored over spring-loaded varieties because of their added firing power and range capabilities.

Interestingly, grenade replicas can also use gas for its projectiles, its grenade launchers, and as throwables. Each variety uses the gas firing system in a slightly different configurations, but the overall mechanism remains the same.
