Airsoft - What It Is and How It's Played

The military and law enforcement simulation games started years ago with the paint ball craze. It has since evolved into a new type of game called 'airsoft'. Players use gear and airsoft guns that are very similar in weight, look and feel to the real things but when you are hit it doesn't hurt half as bad. This is part of the realism of the game and what draws many people to want to play. Originally developed in Japan, this game takes the place of the citizens being able to purchase live firearms and going to a firing range. Firearms are very difficult to procure in Japan without turning to illegal means. Other countries that enjoy this game include Taiwan, China, and South Korea.

Played with a team, the basic objective is to shoot the 'enemy' player before they shoot you. It relies on the Honor System to know whether or not the shot was true as airsoft guns use pellets in place of marking ammunition like paint ball, making the game less messy. Safety gear such as helmets is highly recommended to protect the face and eyes from being hit by an enemy. The rules of the game also allow for one of the team members to play 'medic'. They will evaluate where the player is hit, and how long they must wait before rejoining the game. There are even rules in airsoft for how weapon hits are counted.

There are three types of airsoft guns available for purchase. Airsoft spring loaded guns are the cheapest of the three unless they fire at a higher and faster rate. AEG - or electric - guns use a battery and are automatic, but unless they have been professionally upgraded, they are not very powerful. The most powerful of the guns, and the most expensive, are the gas guns. These use carbon dioxide, propane, green gas, and high pressure air cartridges to fire the pellets.

Other gear for airsoft play besides the protective gear can also be purchased for the game. Clothing such as vests and belts, additional weaponry - namely grenades, pistols or rifles - and equipment including extra magazine cartridges and speed loaders are all available. Equipping oneself with this gear could become quite expensive, although the serious player will not worry about the initial cost layout. Basic set up for immediate play would include the airsoft gun, pellets and protective gear. Additional items could be added to the arsenal at a later date to increase the fun and excitement of the game.

Prices for these guns start as low as $27.00 plus tax for a basic spring loaded rifle and top out at $129.95 plus tax for a spring loaded sniper rifle. Electric rifles start at $35.00 plus tax and go as high as $699.99 plus tax. Gas rifles price starting at $127.00 plus tax and go to $194.00 plus tax. Pistols are also available in the three main types and start at $2.50 plus tax and go as high as $149.95 plus tax.
