A Brief History of Airsoft

What is Airsoft? How do you play? Do you have to join organized competitions to enjoy Airsoft? Let's start with a little Airsoft history. Airsoft, and the interesting, fun sport that it has become today, began in Japan, where ownership of firearms is so strictly regulated that it is illegal for a Japanese citizen to even hold a gun in their hand, much less actually own one. Handguns are completely forbidden. The general population is only permitted to own shotguns and air rifles, and strenuous licensing requirements actually keep most people from ever owning shotguns.

Because of these requirements, most residents chose legal replicas that looked, felt, and shot just like the real thing. These compressed air powered replicas quickly became popular with Japanese citizens, and organized competitions soon followed. Naturally, this new, exciting sport rapidly spread throughout Asia, Europe, and eventually to the United States and Canada.

From their early use in Japan, to their present day use around the world, Airsoft guns have radically transformed both law enforcement and military training, and created an entirely new competitive sport among people of all ages, sexes, and sizes. The realistic look, feel, and action of the weapons, coupled with their relative affordability and safety (when properly handled and equipped), are second to none.

Over the past dozen years, organized Airsoft competitions have sprung up throughout the United States and Canada, including target shooting, skirmishes, and tactical "war games" that operate much like military maneuvers, with full battle gear, squads, and simulated battles. There are literally thousands of organized groups that gather to play against each other and other groups on weekends, and many Airsoft enthusiasts often spend thousands of dollars on a variety of weapons (pistols, rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns, grenades, and more), eye protection, camouflage clothing, boots, etc. You, of course, can spend as little or as much as you like, and still have all the enjoyment of owning an Airsoft gun that looks, feels, and shoots like the real thing!
